I’m Minku Han, a visual designer based in Waterloo, Ontario, with about six years of experience across in-house teams, startups and freelance work.
Some of my favourite moments in design are small ones. A client seeing their sign go up for the first time, a coworker using a template without needing help, or a small business owner carrying their identity forward after handoff. I like work that quietly makes something clearer or easier for someone.
At NIC Systems, I led design through a full brand relaunch and supported the parent company and its two sub-brands across brand and marketing work. Before that, I was Lead Designer at Rent Panda, working across social, print, events and video. My freelance work has also given me the chance to manage end-to-end projects directly with clients across a range of industries.
I studied Global Business and Digital Arts at the University of Waterloo, graduating with Dean’s Honours, with an exchange term at City University of Hong Kong. It’s where I learned to think about design and business as parts of the same conversation.
Questions first, then direction.
Before I design anything, I listen. I want to understand what needs to be communicated, who it is for, and what matters most.
That can mean talking through a brief, looking at how the work will actually be seen and used, or finding the constraint that matters most. From there, I build or clarify a visual direction and adapt it across the formats and environments where it needs to live.
I also care about what happens after handoff. When other people need to keep using the work, I like leaving enough structure, whether through guidelines, templates or reusable patterns, to help the direction stay clear and consistent.
Exploring one place at a time
Beyond design, I love to travel. I’ve visited Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam and Korea, and I’m always looking forward to the next destination. I enjoy discovering places with a strong sense of character, trying local food and simply seeing how everyday life feels somewhere different.
